Latest US poll: Biden job approval rating below 50%

A new national poll released by Quinnipiac University on Feb. 3 shows that President Joe Biden’s job approval rating has dropped below 50 percent, but more people approve of his job performance than disapprove.

Forty-nine percent of 1,075 Americans questioned by telephone Jan. 28 and Feb. 1 said they approved of the job Biden is doing in the White House, while 36 percent disapproved and 16 percent said they were “unsure.”

Quinnipiac pollster Tim Malloy noted that with the new administration facing the twin challenges of dealing with a deteriorating economy and reassuring a public exhausted by the new champion, Biden’s job approval ratings are steady but not stellar.

Since his inauguration on January 20, Biden’s average approval rating in national polls has been 54 percent and his disapproval rating 36 percent. The approval rating is higher than it was when Trump took office in January 2017, when his approval rating was between 40 and 50 percent, but it lags behind his three previous presidents. In January 2009, Obama’s approval rating was above 60 percent in national polls, while George W. Bush and Bill Clinton both had approval ratings above 55 percent at the start of their terms.

Mr. Biden’s polling numbers have large partisan and gender gaps. Nearly nine in 10 Democrats approve of Biden’s job performance, compared with 11 percent of Republicans. His favor-disapprove margin among women was 58-27%, while among men it was 38-45%.

In addition, the numbers show congressional leaders of both parties with lower approval ratings than their disapproval ratings. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer is favored by a 37-42 percent margin, while Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell is even less favored by a 21-67 percent margin. House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi is favored by a 45-47 percent margin, while House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy is favored by a 27-45 percent margin.
